My name is Sophie Balchin and I am an artist
living in Melbourne. I completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of
New South Wales College of Fine Arts, Sydney in 1993 and a Master of Art
(by coursework) in 2001. I have been practising and exhibiting my work
since leaving art school. In 2007 I became the first person accredited to teach
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain workshops in Australia. Click here to see some
of my artwork.
I believe that
everyone can learn to draw. Drawing is a skill like any other- reading, riding a
bike, playing the piano . Like any other skill, the key to success with drawing
is to learn the basics and then practise them until they become second
nature. I teach drawing using methods that enable students to build their
drawing skills based on the assumption that to learn to draw you need to learn
to look at things differently - to see differently. In effect
when you learn to draw, you are actually learning to process visual information
in a completely new way. This makes drawing a great way to keep your brain
active, to improve problem solving skills and increase lateral thinking and
creativity.
